Square Enix Leads 2025 Metacritic Publisher Rankings Followed by High Scores from Gamirror Games Capcom Thunderful and Microsoft through Quality Products like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Monster Hunter Wilds
The 2025 publisher rankings show Square Enix as the leading publisher according to Metacritic which conducted an extensive evaluation of video game publishers for the upcoming year. Square Enix has achieved the top position through its first time accomplishment of scoring 330.5 points which secured first place on the aggregator's leaderboard.
The PC version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth won critical acclaim which resulted in the game achieving a perfect score of 90 out of 100. The company achieved a major milestone when it managed to exceed established industry benchmarks through its superior product quality and product delivery system.
Gamirror Games secured second place with 322.4 points in a close competition for the highest ranking positions. The gaming team received their highest rating for the PC version of Absolum which earned 87 points. Capcom secured third place with 322.2 points because their game Monster Hunter Wilds received positive reviews on the Xbox Series X.
Other top performers include:
- Thunderful took the fourth spot with a score of 306.8
- Microsoft secured fifth place with 305.7 points
The PlayStation 5 port of Forza Horizon 5 represented Microsoft's most successful release because it achieved a score of 92 out of 100.
The top ten positions include multiple publishers who represent different publishing companies. Take Two Interactive earned 304 points with Borderlands 4 for Xbox Series X serving as their lead title. SEGA achieved 303.9 points while Electronic Arts reached 302.9 points through the successful performance of Split Fiction. Raw Fury completed the top group with 301 points while Dotemu finished with 302.2 points.
The Metacritic scoring system evaluates publisher performance by measuring both the number of titles released and their respective average review scores which provides a fair assessment throughout the entire year.
The leadership of the organization changed from 2024 when SEGA held the first position with a score of 325.5 points. Square Enix operated differently than other publishers which struggled to achieve critical success during 2025.
Idea Factory performed as the lowest scoring company among 28 eligible organizations through its total score of 188.6. The six games from Idea Factory only achieved positive reviews for Battlefield Waltz which received a score of 77 on the Switch platform.
The annual rankings demonstrate how game development has transformed into a market where companies must maintain quality control across several platforms to achieve both technical and critical success.
