Android 16 Market Share Surpasses Android 15 as Most Used Mobile OS According to StatCounter Data

Android 16 Becomes Most Widely Used Operating System Surpassing Android 15 While Fragmentation Continues Across Older Versions and Android 17 Development Progresses For Future Release

Android 16 now stands as the most widely used version of the operating system following a period during which mobile software formats experienced their first actual change. The March 2026 analytics that StatCounter released showed that users worldwide had begun to switch to all current software platforms. The tracking period shows that Android 16 gained 21.61% of active mobile devices which is an increase from its previous 30 day total of 18.9% while it surpassed the previous leading platform.

Android 16 Market Share Surpasses Android 15 as Most Used Mobile OS According to StatCounter Data

The increased usage of Android 15 has resulted in its drop to the second position. The earlier version which had previously controlled the market now shows a market share reduction from 20.98% to 20.16%. The data shows that people now prefer to upgrade their devices yet most of the world population continues to use older smartphone software. Android 14 and Android 13 still retain their presence in the active device market with each version holding approximately 14% of total devices while Android 12 keeps 10.22% of all users who remain on its outdated framework.

The distribution of these figures indicates an ecosystem that remains highly fragmented but has started to move toward its latest version. The market has divided itself into two groups with one group using the current software and the other group using hardware that has reached its maximum operational capacity.

The development process continues to progress at an unbroken rhythm. The industry forecasts predict that Android 17 will launch in the second quarter of 2026. The Google Pixel hardware series will serve as the first testing platform for this new deployment according to the established release pattern which will result in a major shift for Android users who will distribute themselves across different software versions.
