Amazon Lord of the Rings MMO Officially Cancelled as Internal Studio Issues and Job Cuts End Development of the Highly Anticipated Middle earth Project
The long, silent effort toward a monumental Lord of the Rings massively multiplayer game is finally over with official confirmation of its cancellation. According to report by Eurogamer, the higher ups at Amazon officially killed off the venture after several years of little progress. Although originally announced in early 2023, the latest news reveals that the game, despite being an immense IP, never progressed beyond the initial concept stages.
Sources who spoke with Eurogamer claim that a major contributor to the game’s downfall was a lack of fundamental planning and studio synergy. One insider reportedly said:
When Amazon obtained the license, the company immediately announced work on the MMO without even discussing it with the developers.
For the Orange County studio, ongoing work on Amazon Games’ first massive multiplayer, New World, was a problem. For a few initial years, only two people reportedly worked on the Tolkien title, and they came up with a single concept art piece, before any sort of pre production would kick off in the final months of 2025, as the studio had hoped to move nearly 1000 workers from New World onto the Middle earth production. However, internal restructuring and job cuts ultimately brought an end to the project before it could make it any further.
Amazon representatives claim that although this particular MMO is defunct, the company still hopes to explore the Middle earth lore for interactive media in the future should the opportunity arise. Presently, the Amazon Games internal manpower dedicated to the genre reside with the Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty development teams, along with the necessary infrastructure left for New World. This cancellation represents a massive retreat for Amazon in the field of massive multiplayer, especially as other fantasy MMOS continue to gain steam in the market.
Though this Lord of the Rings game may be no more, it is not the only project the universe will see; Embacer Group, along with Crystal Dynamics, are working on a title based on J. R. R. Tolkien's literary series, though reports suggest the upcoming title from the Tomb Raider creators is more along the lines of an open world single player experience hoping to compete in the footsteps of Hogwarts Legacy. For now, however, the vision for an MMO in the Shire remains lost.
