Intel and Apple Partner for Domestic US Chip Production with Government Support to Transform Silicon Supply Chains and Revitalize Foundry Operations
As we predicted, Apple is now moving more of its manufacturing operations to the United States. Intel and Apple have established a preliminary agreement for the US chip giant to manufacture processors for future Apple devices. According to reports from the Wall Street Journal the two companies concluded a formal deal in recent months following intensive negotiations that spanned more than 1 year. This partnership represents a significant shift for Apple which has historically relied on external foundries outside of the United States for its massive silicon requirements.
The Trump administration's involvement became the key factor which enabled the partnership to reach completion. The federal government transformed 9,000,000,000 in grants during the previous summer into Intel stock which resulted in a 10% ownership stake for the US government. The commitment was established through Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick who organized multiple meetings with executives including Tim Cook. Intel has completed manufacturing partnerships with both Apple and Nvidia and SpaceX through this agreement.
Intel Foundry operations and market performance will experience notable changes from this development. The deal arrives as Intel CEO Lip Bu Tan attempts to revitalize the company foundry unit which has struggled with performance issues for several years. Intel operates two main divisions which handle chip design and external manufacturing operations. Apple brings more than 200,000,000 iPhone shipments every year along with additional iPads and Mac computers to Intel which now secures its first major customer in the foundry industry. Intel stock increased by 14% after the news was announced while Apple stock experienced a 2% increase.
Intel manufactured chips will be used in which Apple products but the company has not revealed specific information about this matter. The partnership supports the wider goal of establishing domestic silicon production facilities within the United States. Intel has expanded its business operations into robotics and artificial intelligence through its processor collaboration with Tesla and SpaceX on the Terafab project. The company has secured multiple contracts which establish Intel as an emerging competitor in the semiconductor market that international companies have controlled.
The supply chain for Apple has undergone significant changes according to data which both companies keep confidential. Apple wants new manufacturing partners for main processors because Intel and Samsung showed interest in preliminary talks about their operational relationship. Apple becoming Intel's customer brings validation to the aggressive turnaround strategy which company leaders began last spring. The company now holds 3 major partnerships with the most influential tech entities in the world signifying a shift in its business trajectory for the next several years.
