MediaTek Dimensity 8550 Mid Range Chip Features Advanced On Device AI and Gemini Nano V3 Integration to Bring Flagship LLM Capabilities to Affordable Mobile Devices
MediaTek now offers the Dimensity 8550 which will take mid range mobile hardware further by allowing complex on device AI to be run on a less expensive piece of hardware. This is a big step because, until now, a certain level of complexity of AI required a flagship chip; however now with the Dimensity 8550 you won't have to fork out for flagship pricing to run advanced AI on device.
The big leap that the Dimensity 8550 has over its Dimensity 8500 predecessor is that this new hardware will come native with support for Gemini Nano V3 large language models. As long as your device has enough RAM and the other hardware features needed for the Gemini Intelligence platform, this processor will be able to run complex local AI computations at speeds, or above the speeds you may expect. The purpose of this to make it simpler for you to get AI in to the hands of many rather than only the few.
According to MediaTek's press release, the Dimensity 8550 uses a very power efficient 4nm manufacturing process and includes an 8 core CPU which uses Cortex A725 cores which are organized in a 1 + 3 + 4 layout with clock speeds up to 3.4Ghz on the lead high performance core. The unit also includes a Neural Processing Unit for localized on device AI.
Asides from the integrated LLM Booster the Dimensity 8550 will have all of the exact same physical hardware features as the base Dimensity 8500 which is a big plus as it should mean there are not a large amount of re engineering costs for manufactures to integrate it in to their devices. However, how much extra will the inclusion of the LLM Booster make the wholesale cost of the Dimensity 8550. MediaTek has yet to announce the final pricing for it to manufacturers.
