Samsung Display Unveils Worlds First QD OLED Panel With 4K 360Hz and FHD 680Hz Dual Mode Capabilities Plus VESA True Black 600 and Better Text Readability
Samsung Display has developed the 1st QD OLED monitor panel that offers both 4K resolution and a 360Hz refresh rate. Prior to this design, display manufacturers have had to either reduce the refresh rates of their 4K panels to 240Hz, or decrease the screen resolution to QHD to overcome the tremendous volume of pixel data that must be fed through the driving circuits per second, which normally overloads standard driving circuits. The hardware bottlenecks of internal panel circuits and driving circuits are now optimized, to offer a very clean picture quality with swift transition times. This 31.5 inch screen is likely to be demonstrated publically at Computex in Taipei.
The panel boasts a Dual Mode feature where the driving capabilities can be changed according to specific needs. The active resolution can be reduced to FHD where the panel is capable of a super high 680Hz, which will present very fluid motion for fast paced games, for example first person shooters. This new panel will be publicly demonstrated at next month's Computex in Taipei.
The panel has also been granted VESA DisplayHDR True Black 600, showing the panels performance concerning black levels, and high dynamic range brightness. To gain VESA DisplayHDR True Black 600, the screen must not exceed 0.0005nits black level, and a peak of 600 nits must be achieved at 10% average picture level (APL). This surpasses the old True Black 500 specification which, up until this point, dominated the market for self emissive monitors.
The panel offers new technology for displaying text which addresses text fringing, a problem which was historically found on Organic Light Emitting Diode panels. This is done by employing a V stripe pixel arrangement, where red, green and blue pixels are vertically aligned, resulting in very sharp text on the screen which can be useful for such applications as programming, documents and content creation.
Samsung Display is currently in discussions with over 10 global hardware brands regarding integration of this 31.5 inch panel into consumer monitors and has scheduled full scale production for the last two quarters of the year.
Brad Jung, manager for large display marketing, stated that "It is an ideal optimization that can satisfy user's demand for premium display hardware."
