Battlefield Hardline multiplayer servers shut down on PS4 and Xbox One while Electronic Arts delists console versions from digital marketplaces
Electronic Arts has officially shut down online multiplayer for the console editions of Battlefield Hardline. This server closure means there will no longer be any multiplayer matchmaking for the game on PS4 or Xbox One.
The publisher also announced that the game has been delisted from online stores, so players purchasing on the consoles will have no single player campaign as well.
The closure concludes a multi step decommissioning process for the game. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions were removed from the marketplaces and had their online services shut down by 2024. As of this process, PC remains the only platform to host functioning multiplayer servers.
Unlike the central entries of the franchise created at DICE, this police based expansion was created by Visceral Games, the studio best known for the Dead Space horror franchise.
The game was initially released in 2015 and could build a modest community over time with its interesting concept revolving around police and criminals instead of regular warfare.
This decision has been extremely disappointing to long term fans of the shooter. A 2 minute video of the final moments of the console multiplayer experience was posted to Reddit and received over 337 comments and 5000+ upvotes in 48 hours. There was also much disappointment reflected in comments about not having backward compatibility anymore this game mode will be eternally lost to console history as the publisher gradually cuts down their server architecture.
