Gears of War E Day Budget Reportedly Exceeds 400 Million Dollars

Microsoft Gears of War E Day Budget Reportedly Surpasses 400 Million Dollars Amid Concerns Over ROI and Canceled PlayStation 5 Port Rumors

Microsoft have upped their spending massively on big single player exclusives, which they seem to have prioritized especially after the announcement of Gears of War E Day. The project however seems to be attracting huge criticism from the gaming industry due to the massive investment put into the game. According to information supplied by Tom Henderson an industry insider, the new action title has been given a budget of over $400,000,000 dollars to produce it.

This budget has already made it one of the most expensive productions ever made in interactive entertainment. As a comparison, news broke recently from Danish media that 007 First Light costs over $200,000,000 dollars to produce, so Microsoft have invested double the budget of a major spy thriller contemporary in Gears of War E Day. While we don't know what this budget covers, this likely means significant investment went into engineering, asset generation and marketing.

Compounding this are recent rumors suggesting an unexpected change of direction for the title. Earlier information reported that Microsoft had also begun to develop a PlayStation 5 port of the game. The port was supposedly in final stages of development and close to completion before being pulled by the company at the last minute. Following this recent sudden change in platform strategy Henderson seemed skeptical about the games prospects of making a large return on investment from the vast development budget

I have my doubts if this game will make its $400 million dollar budget back. This does worry me.

Gears of War E Day is expected to release late 2026 and will be available on PC, Xbox Series X and S and on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on day one. This last point will factor heavily in what Microsoft considers a return on investment for this $400 million dollar development cost.
