Original Call of Duty Black Ops and Black Ops 2 Heading to PlayStation

Treyarch and Iron Galaxy announce original Call of Duty Black Ops and Black Ops 2 official ports coming to modern PlayStation consoles for game preservation and multiplayer stability

Treyarch, the publishing studio from Activision, have now revealed that original Call of Duty Black Ops and Call of Duty Black Ops 2 will now receive official ports to the new PlayStation consoles. As can be seen on the official Treyarch social media channels, this has been a process they have worked on in conjunction with the technically talented porting developers Iron Galaxy. This release has an aim of July and represents a significant time for preservation of the first person shooter genre.

This project means that two of the greatest ever Call of Duty multiplayer experiences will be released again, this time to a new market, as Iron Galaxy are very experienced in technical porting of game codebases and therefore are ideally positioned to handle the migration of both of these acclaimed titles that were both released back in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 generation. The developers themselves have yet to comment as to whether these ports will receive visual upgrades or modern matchmaking integrations, but the main objective is stability of play on newer hardware.

Fans have long been calling for playable, modern versions of these two classic multiplayer games and the zombies mode. The original Black Ops came out over a decade ago, and in that time has helped define the style of storytelling that the franchise would continue for many years to come, all centred around Cold War espionage, it was Call of Duty Black Ops 2, however, that really cemented itself in many player's eyes with its choice driven, branching narrative, futuristic setting and arguably, the greatest ever competitive multiplayer ever produced.

This port comes at an opportune time as it provides PlayStation users with a way to actually play these games, whereas a lot of the old Call of Duty's that are playable do so through back compatibility on other console families, there has been no direct way to play the multiplayer for these games. The launch will now give both old and new players the opportunity to reacquaint themselves or to play from the start of the very successful sub series, and both will now finally be able to compete online, on the modern hardware that both console generation's new consoles provide.

Specific details of what to expect from these games are yet to be fully released however, it is thought that owing to the partnership with Iron Galaxy the games will be more stable and more responsive to input. Users also want these games to be available as cross generation titles and would welcome any potential fixes to the servers which had a tendency to fall over in the original games. Treyarch have stated that more detailed information will become available closer to the launch in mid summer about specific things such as resolution target, frames per second and digital stores it will be available on.
