Payday 2 Receives Massive Diesel 3.0 Engine Upgrade Featuring 64 bit Migration and Dramatic Storage Compression
Nearly 13 years after the release of the cooperative shooter Payday 2 the game continues to maintain a large active player base. To ensure the title remains active for years to come Sidetrack Games has announced a significant technical overhaul. The studio is re coding the fundamental model of Payday 2 to implement a new and flexible structure.
The update centers on the migration of the game engine to Diesel 3.0. This transition upgrades the environment from a venerable 32 bit architecture to a powerful 64 bit one. Furthermore the graphics API is finally moving from the outdated DirectX 9 environment to DirectX 11.
This technical shift will dramatically reduce the storage requirements for the game. The total installation size will drop from 87 GB to just 32 GB. Additionally SSD users will experience significantly reduced loading times due to an optimized asset streaming pipeline.
Alongside these backend improvements Sidetrack Games is introducing quality of life tweaks for matchmaking lobbies. Players will soon be able to password protect their game lobbies using up to six characters. A Steam exclusive beta test for the new engine has been announced to monitor stability with the test scheduled to run until late July.
Sidetrack Games has issued a warning that this massive technical change will likely break community mods. However the team has promised to do their best to assist the modding community in achieving compatibility with the new structure.
