Major Xbox Development Studios Ninja Theory Double Fine and Compulsion Games Face Potential Closures and Independent Spin Off Negotiations
Reports from the industry suggest that some of the largest development teams in Xbox roster may soon find their operations threatened due to ongoing internal corporate restructuring at Microsoft. The corporation is allegedly considering closing its three studios Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory. If such closures were to go through, it would signal a profound shift in strategy for the tech giant following a phase of significant expansion.
According to The Verge, Ninja Theory outlook appears especially dire. The news site states that personnel at the studio responsible for the highly regarded Hellblade titles were told one week after the public reveal of their new game, Senua, to "collect their personal effects."
Such swift action appears to confirm Microsoft immediate decision has already been made for the studio.
Despite the overwhelming probability of closure, there is a potential alternative still on the table. Sources speaking to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier claim all three development studios involved are "currently discussing ways to separate from Microsoft."
Apparently, studio heads are actively negotiating with Microsoft executives about finding buyers from outside the company or achieving self ownership. Such a scenario would be reminiscent of Toys for Bob, a 2024 spin off that eventually left Activision independently, albeit following a number of redundancies before their newest game was even announced.
All three of the concerned studios possess varied portfolios. Compulsion Games is developing South of Midnight, and Double Fine has long produced beloved gaming experiences, particularly the Psychonauts series. Either studio moving ownership would require intricate negotiations about its property rights, as most intellectual property currently belongs to Microsoft.
The supposed impending layoffs and studio closures have created an atmosphere of palpable anxiety throughout the Xbox division. As Schreier notes, general morale has plummeted as historically successful development studios wonder what other teams will become subjects of corporate consolidation. Furthermore, an internal source mentioned that Arkane Lyon could be one of the next first party studios to be extensively analyzed and criticized from a corporate perspective.
