BOE Upgrades Chengdu B19 Plant to Expand Ultra Large LCD Production

BOE is upgrading its production facilities in Chengdu to ramp up the manufacturing of ultra large liquid crystal display panels. The Chinese display maker is investing 2,827,000,000 yuan to transition its 8.6 generation factory line toward high performance oxide thin film transistor technology. This retrofitting project will expand the maximum panel output size to 116 inches to secure a stronger position in the premium television sector.

The core of this investment involves a massive reallocation of mother glass capacity at the B19 facility. Previously, the plant dedicated 158,700 glass sheets monthly to average sized panels between 50 and 58 inches, while only 4,300 sheets went to larger products. The upgrade will divert 60% of that smaller capacity, converting 96,700 sheets per month into dedicated lines for screens ranging from 85 to 116 inches. This represents a major shift toward larger formats to capture higher profit margins in a saturated global TV market.

By replacing older amorphous silicon methods with oxide thin film transistors, the factory will produce panels with much better technical specifications. Oxide technology provides faster electron mobility and lower power leakage, which are critical for running large displays smoothly. It also improves screen refresh rates and light transmittance. This allows the company to deliver premium display quality on massive screens without the extreme power consumption of older designs.

This push into giant screens is a strategic move to bypass the high production costs of organic light emitting diode displays. South Korean manufacturers currently dominate the OLED market, but producing OLED screens larger than 100 inches remains extremely difficult and expensive. Yield rates on existing 8.5 generation OLED lines drop sharply at massive sizes.

BOE plans to offer cheaper ultra large liquid crystal options to undercut these premium OLED models. Industry data from SigmaIntel indicates that the market share of televisions sized 80 inches and larger will reach 13.8% in China this year, highlighting a rapid growth trend that Chinese display companies want to dominate.
