Bungie has added a temporary pure PvE mode to Marathon to address ongoing player feedback about high stress matches. The update introduces Vault Breaker, an experimental roguelite mode that removes opposing squads from the equation entirely. But players will have to wait and see if this cooperative shift can win back the audience.
The new mode arrives alongside the recent 1.1.5 patch and runs for a limited time. Players can explore the Cryo Archive location alone, with 1 partner, or as a full squad without facing rival teams. Bungie is treating this trial as a test run that could eventually become a permanent feature of the shooter.
To protect the core game economy, gear found during these cooperative runs will not transfer to other modes. Instead, players earn a unique currency called Vault Data. This currency allows players to upgrade specialized kits and purchase cosmetic or gameplay items for the main modes. Developers hope this approach offers a less punishing entry point for newcomers.
Marathon has struggled to maintain its player base since launch due to its intense difficulty and steep learning curve. While the gunplay and visual art style received praise, the intense competitive format pushed casual players away. This experimental mode represents a major attempt by Bungie to broaden the appeal of the game. By offering a space where players can focus on progression without the constant threat of enemy teams, the studio hopes to rebuild a sustainable community.
