China Commences Domestic Production of Immersion DUV Lithography Machines

China has commenced mass production of its first domestically developed immersion deep ultraviolet lithography machines to reduce dependency on foreign semiconductor technology. According to reporting by Reuters, the initiative represents a major victory for Beijing in securing an alternative supply of critical silicon printing equipment. However, the newly manufactured tools remain far behind the industry standard models produced by market leader ASML.

The production effort is being directed by Shanghai Aishengna Electronic Technology Group, which quietly incorporated engineering teams from local startups and Shanghai Micro Electronics Equipment. Reports from tech news outlet The Information indicate that the newly established firm plans to build 5 of these machines this year, with a target of 20 units next year. The finished equipment will reportedly go directly to leading domestic chip manufacturers, including SMIC, Hua Hong, and ChangXin Memory Technologies.

Corporate records show that Aishengna was founded with 7 billion yuan in registered capital, funded entirely by 2 local state investment firms. The company has operated in complete secrecy. It lacks even a public website, while swallowing smaller research groups to accelerate development. This consolidation of domestic talent has allowed China to establish a functional prototype of a deep ultraviolet system, a task that previously seemed years away.

While the development triggered a temporary 8% slide in ASML stock prices, financial analysts believe the commercial threat is minimal in the short term. The Dutch giant still accounts for the vast majority of international lithography tool sales, with Chinese buyers making up 16% of its net revenue so far this year. Building a handful of prototype machines in a laboratory is a big step, but scale manufacturing requires high volume reliability and throughput over thousands of silicon runs before it can truly compete on the global stage.
