US video game spending saw a sharp drop in June as overall sales fell 21% compared to the same period last year. Sensor Circana analyst Mat Piscatella reported that consumers spent $4.5 billion on gaming software, hardware, and accessories, down from the $5.7 billion spent during the same month last year. This decline stems directly from the massive market spike generated by the Nintendo Switch 2 launch during the previous summer.
The hardware market remained highly active despite the overall spending dip. The Nintendo Switch 2 claimed the top spot as the top selling console for the month. Sony's PlayStation 5 secured 2nd place, while the Xbox Series came in 3rd. Xbox Series hardware experienced a massive 86% jump in sales compared to the same period last year, though the increase was not enough to overtake its competitors.
The software charts revealed a brand new lineup of leaders. For the month of June, UFC 6 claimed the 1st position, followed closely by Meccha Chameleon in 2nd and 007 First Light in 3rd. The rest of the top 10 list includes:
- Star Fox in 4th
- LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight in 5th
- Tomodachi Life Living the Dream in 6th
- Forza Horizon 6 in 7th
- MLB The Show 26 in 8th
- Minecraft in 9th
- NBA 2K26 in 10th
Data covering the first half of the year paints a broader picture of consumer preferences. Resident Evil Requiem established itself as the top seller for the entire 6 month period. Crimson Desert secured the 2nd spot, followed by 007 First Light in 3rd and MLB The Show 26 in 4th.
The remainder of the half year top sellers includes Forza Horizon 6 in 5th, LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight in 6th, and Tomodachi Life Living the Dream in 7th. Pokemon Pokopia finished in 8th, with WWE 2K26 in 9th and NBA 2K26 securing the 10th spot. These retail figures, shared by Mat Piscatella on social media, highlight a changing environment where massive single player sequels and yearly sports franchises continue to hold the bulk of market share.
