Intel Restarts Core Silicon Production for Multiple Generations to Address Market Supply Dynamics and High Demand for DDR4 Motherboards in 2024
Intel is adjusting its silicon manufacturing strategy to address changing hardware supply dynamics. According to a supply chain report from the industry outlet ChannelGate, the semiconductor company plans to restart the production of its 13th generation and 14th generation Core processors. This operational pivot will significantly increase the volume of desktop processors flowing into retail channels, with a particular focus on the mainland Chinese market where demand for previous generation hardware remains high.
The current supply growth supports generation 10, generation 12, generation 13, and generation 14 silicon. Distribution channels are intended to absorb a significant volume of generation 10 and generation 12 inventory simultaneously. This will be followed by a consistent distribution of recently restarted generation 13 and generation 14 designs. This decision reacts to current trends in component pricing affecting PC builders and system integrators.
Greenlighting the production of older CPUs is a significant move that hinges on the current turbulence in memory markets. Reports indicate that during last year’s international computer expos, several motherboard and memory makers cited a clear industry pivot away from recent DDR5 memory. This shift back to DDR4 is likely caused by persistent shortages and cost increases for modern modules.
It is confirmed that at least two major motherboard manufacturers are increasing production for DDR4 compatible boards. This production ramp up is expected to continue throughout the second half of this year and well into the next. Alongside this supply, Intel is reported to launch a third refresh of the Raptor Lake architecture in the first half of next year. This refresh is expected to utilize the same LGA 1700 socket and DDR4 configuration.
Intel is not the only chipmaker taking advantage of the ongoing demand for DDR4 hardware. AMD has followed suit by re supporting these platforms. They recently re launched their widely used Ryzen 7 5800X3D gaming CPU to meet market needs.
AMD released a custom 10th anniversary edition of the CPU targeted specifically at the Socket AM4 platform. The retail package includes a custom carbon nanotube thermal pad and is expected to come in at 2599 yuan. This move reinforces the longevity of older platforms in the face of current market pricing.
