Sony Interactive Entertainment Discontinues PlayStation 3 and PS Vita Digital Storefronts in Staged Global Rollout While Maintaining Redownload Access for Existing Game Libraries
Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed the discontinuation of the PlayStation Store for the PS3 console and the PlayStation Vita mobile device over time. As stated by the company in an official announcement, the framework of the growing world of digital business and machine payments does not lend itself to these older hardware architectures.
The storefronts will not be shut down in one global event but rather in waves. The first wave of digital store shutdown will affect users in Mexico Honduras and Nicaragua. After that phase is complete the second wave will shut down additional territories across Latin America and the Middle East.
The third wave will conclude the process by shutting down all remaining services worldwide in one final event. This will end the digital marketplace functionality not only for the home console but for the portable device as well.
Once both area storefronts have officially halted users will be unable to buy any new digital software game add ons or virtual currency on those platforms. For the protection of players Sony has announced a transition policy. Users will retain the ability to redownload and play all of their previously purchased games and media files.
Maintaining digital storefronts on older hardware creates a massive maintenance overhead for platform operators. Because banks are constantly upgrading encryption and transaction protocols legacy operating systems on older hardware must be patched with frequent security updates.
By removing the marketplace software from these older systems Sony intends to free up engineering and server resources for live platforms where the majority of the player base is active. This shift ensures that technical support is focused on modern hardware experiences.
The closure of these two digital stores marks the end of an era that spanned two decades of hardware history. While physical media for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita will continue to be items for collectors it is no longer possible to purchase new digital titles from the servers. Sony expressed gratitude to the community for helping build an extensive library of games while confirming a focus on growing infrastructure for modern hardware.
