Square Enix has officially announced the termination of its mobile spin off Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis. The free to play gacha role playing game will permanently shut down its servers this autumn after nearly 3 years of service. According to the publisher the closure will affect users across mobile operating systems including iOS and Android as well as personal computer players utilizing the Steam platform.
Although the final server blackout is scheduled for this autumn inside game currency transactions have already been disabled. The developers have committed to releasing the final story updates and community events leading up to the termination. Project producer Shoichi Ichikawa issued a statement thanking the player base for their support and explaining that the decision came after extensive internal deliberations. Ichikawa explained that the team ultimately concluded that "continuing its development is no longer possible" due to the realities of sustaining the project.
The title originally launched 3 years prior with the goal of compiling the entire timeline of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII into a single mobile experience. The game also served as a narrative vehicle to explore the backstories of major characters including the antagonist Sephiroth. This shutdown marks another setback for the mobile strategy of Square Enix. The company previously canceled Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier which ended its lifecycle after slightly more than 1 year of active service.
