Ubisoft has pushed a new Far Cry game codenamed Kodiak into active development at Vantage Studios. This upcoming open world shooter focuses on player driven stories and replaces another project in the franchise that was recently canceled. However, players will have to wait quite a while to play it, as the release is still several years away.
According to a report from Insider Gaming, this new project is built on the foundations of a canceled extraction shooter codenamed Maverick. That previous project was scrapped after facing internal development issues, prompting the studio to leave the extraction shooter market behind. The change is final for now. The team is now repurposing those assets to create what sources describe as a highly ambitious first person shooter.
At the same time, the next mainline entry in the franchise, codenamed Blackbird, is moving forward after surviving its own share of production hurdles. This mainline title is set to feature a multiplayer component where more than 1 player can experience the open world together. This is a first for the main series. In an internal interview at Vantage Studios, executive Charlie Guillemot described this project as a major milestone, calling it Act One. This phrasing suggests the publisher plans to build multiple games around this specific concept if the initial launch receives a strong reception.
Vantage Studios is currently managing a heavy production load to keep its biggest brands active. Alongside the Far Cry series, the developer is actively working on the Assassin's Creed and Rainbow Six Siege franchises. This strategy aims to deliver a variety of distinct gaming experiences to different audiences under the same massive intellectual properties.
