Valve has updated the gifting mechanics in Steam to make sending digital games to friends and family easier. The update introduces cross region game purchases, direct email delivery options, and a guest checkout system that works without an account. But any email gift that remains unaccepted for 30 days will trigger an automatic refund.
Historically, pricing discrepancies between countries prevented users from sending games to friends living in more expensive regions. Steam is changing this restriction. According to the official Steam news channel, the system now calculates the price difference during the checkout process and allows the sender to pay the adjusted amount. The only requirement is that the recipient must be on the sender friend list for this regional adjustment to apply.
This change simplifies the purchasing process. Previously, buyers had to send digital gift cards instead of the actual game. Now, the transaction is direct. The system handles the currency translation behind the scenes, making international gifting seamless.
Buying games for people who do not use the platform is also much simpler now. Valve first introduced a guest checkout option back in 2024, but it was limited to hardware and gift cards. The option now covers every digital game on the storefront. Buyers can use a shared wishlist link to purchase a game as a guest without creating an account.
Sending gifts to an email address is another major addition. If you do not know the recipient account name, you can simply enter their email address during checkout. Steam sends them a message with a link that lets them log in and claim the game. To prevent regional exploits, both the buyer and the receiver must reside in the same country for email gifting to work.
The update changes how wishlists work. Users can organize their lists into custom categories to keep things tidy. Sharing these lists is also easier. You can generate a shared link that is filtered to show only specific games.
These shared links do not require the buyer to be on your friend list. When a family member clicks the link, the shopping cart pre populates with your delivery information. This prevents accidental duplicate purchases and makes buying birthday gifts straightforward.
