Xiaomi Launches Smart Storage Two Bay NAS System with 60TB Support and HyperOS Integration for Home Media Services
Xiaomi has officially launched its first network attached storage device on the Chinese crowdfunding channel Youpin. Dubbed the Smart Storage, this stripped back two bay system marks the company development into home server hardware. Measuring 161mm tall by 200.5mm wide by 85mm deep, the device is designed with a minimal aesthetic so as to not be overtly obvious as a piece of home hardware.
Drive capacity rules have not been announced, but the size of the unit would indicate it is intended to fit into a normal house or flat rather than a server room. The system dimensions provide a compact footprint for modern living spaces.
The Smart Storage hardware supports two bays that are compatible with both 3.5 inch and 2.5 inch SATA hard drives or SSD drives. The maximum supply configuration available in store is 16TB, which is achieved through two pre installed 8TB drives. However, the system hardware is capable of handling a total maximum drive capacity of 60TB, allowing each drive socket to support a single 30TB drive.
At the heart of the system are 4GB of RAM and 32GB of built in flash memory, ensuring system processes are not affected during 4K screen sharing. This is particularly important when media is presented through the HDMI port the units come equipped with. An active fan manages thermals during heavy read and writing operations. While official words from Xiaomi do not specify the processor, industry news indicates it uses the Realtek RTD1619B processor, which is also seen in popular systems like the Synology DS223J.
Connectivity is provided by one USB 3.0 Port, one 2.5G Ethernet Port for fast local network transfers, and one HDMI port supporting 4K at 30Hz. Xiaomi has designed the software specifically for HyperOS, supported by a companion application. Available on iOS, Android, macOS, and Android TV, this operating system offers easy to use file saving and sharing services.
The software supports automatic phone back ups, WeChat database backups, and the direct saving of CCTV footage from home security systems. When plugged into a television, the NAS becomes a powerful media hub, able to play 4K content with HDR10 processing while supporting wireless casting.
Xiaomi has announced crowdfunding expectations separated into three different tiers. The base level configuration offers a 4TB capacity for CNY 2299, which is approximately 300 USD. The next step up offers 8TB for CNY 2899, roughly 420 USD, while the maximum storage available at launch is 16TB costing CNY 4699, approximately 700 USD. International check outs have not yet been specified.
