A new magnetic smartphone controller has surfaced on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. The Abxylute M6 features a sliding design with built in magnets that snap directly onto iPhones or other phones using adhesive plates. But the company has not yet announced a release date or retail price.
The control layout offers a mix of classic gaming designs. The analog sticks sit parallel at the bottom of the controller, mirroring the traditional Sony DualShock setup. However, the action buttons use the standard Xbox ABXY layout, and the directional pad uses a classic cross shape. This hybrid setup aims to provide a familiar feel for both console and mobile players.
Connecting a phone is straightforward. The front of the gamepad has integrated magnets that securely hold MagSafe compatible iPhones. Other smartphone brands can use the device by sticking a magnetic adapter plate to the back of the phone. The physical design also includes inline trigger buttons and removable magnetic handles that let players customize their grip.
Gamers who want to back the project can find the listing on the crowdfunding site, though final production timelines remain unconfirmed. This sliding gamepad could be a solid option for cloud gaming and mobile emulation if the final build quality holds up.
