AMD Quietly Releases NPU Less Ryzen 7 449 and Ryzen 5 439 Mobile Processors

AMD has quietly introduced the Ryzen 7 449 and the Ryzen 5 439, 2 new mobile processors that drop the specialized NPU hardware found in the rest of the silicon family. By stripping away the dedicated AI cores, the chipmaker is moving back toward traditional hardware for mainstream buyers. But the company has yet to confirm retail pricing or laptop design wins.

These new parts are based on the Gorgon Point architecture but feature binned silicon with the neural processing unit disabled. Because of this change, the chips lose the premium Ryzen AI branding completely. This means the hardware cannot meet the 40 TOPS requirement that Microsoft demands for local Copilot plus features. Instead, the platforms fall back to cloud based AI tasks with total platform performance hitting about 8 to 9 TOPS on the lower tier model and 15 to 16 TOPS on the higher tier variant.

The Ryzen 7 449 serves as a slightly slower sibling to the Ryzen AI 7 Pro 450. The silicon keeps the same 4 Zen 5 and 4 Zen 5c layout for a total of 8 cores and 16 threads. It runs with a boost clock of 5.0 GHz and uses a Radeon 860M graphics unit with 8 Compute Units. By comparison, the Pro model boosts 100 MHz faster and has a slightly quicker graphics clock, but both share the same 16MB of L3 cache.

Budget laptop shoppers will likely find the Ryzen 5 439 more common in retail stores. This chip uses a 3 Zen 5 and 3 Zen 5c layout with 6 cores and 12 threads. To lower costs, AMD cut the L3 cache down to 8MB, which is half of what is offered on the Ryzen AI 5 Pro 440. The boost speed reaches 4.6 GHz, and graphics are managed by a Radeon 840M unit with 4 Compute Units. Both of the new silicon designs retain a standard 28W default power draw that can be configured from 15 to 54W by laptop manufacturers.

The rapid addition of these models led to a prominent mistake on the product catalog of the chipmaker. The new processors are listed under a Ryzen 400 category, but the header on the comparison table still displays a legacy Ryzen 6000 Series label. This rushed rollout suggests the company wanted to get these binned options on the market quickly to provide lower pricing for upcoming notebooks. Retailers in competitive regions are expected to stock these designs as an affordable alternative for users who do not run local AI software.
