SpaceX is expanding its wireless ambitions, but Wall Street does not see an existential threat to traditional mobile carriers. A new analysis from Bank of America suggests the Starlink direct to cell push will actually help T Mobile and cell tower operators rather than replace them. High equipment costs and tight spectrum limits mean physical cell towers remain completely essential.
The bank reached this conclusion after talks with T Mobile chief technology officer Dr. John Saw and executives at Crown Castle. Rumors have circulated about SpaceX potentially bypassing cellular towers by placing tiny base stations called femtocells in homes and businesses. Dr. Saw dismissed that idea. Small indoor units struggle with high speed handoffs for drivers on highways and fail to provide reliable coverage through walls. Crown Castle calculated that matching T Mobile outdoor coverage would require 4,000,000 femtocells in New York City alone. Across the entire country, that number balloons to between 500,000,000 and 1,500,000,000 units. At an estimated cost of $1,000 per box, blanket coverage is practically impossible through hardware alone.
Spectrum is the second major wall facing SpaceX. Starlink direct to cell technology operates on limited wireless frequencies. Running satellite signals on the exact same airwaves as ground stations creates interference problems that force operators to slash data capacity. Because of these physics limitations, satellite connections work best as a backup for dead zones and rural patches rather than a full replacement for city networks.
If SpaceX decides to build a genuine terrestrial network, it will almost certainly have to lease space on existing cell towers. Crown Castle points out that tower sites already have fiber lines, power hookups, and pre approved local permits. Dish took this exact route, expanding to 20,000 sites in 4 years and eventually generating over 5% of Crown Castle revenue. SpaceX has massive cash reserves to build hardware quickly, but physical cellular networks still require decades of tower infrastructure to work properly.
