Fujitsu has revealed development targets for Monaka, a server processor designed to cut electricity demand in green data centers. Built on a 2 nanometer process using ARM architecture, the silicon promises 2 times the computing power and double the energy efficiency of current market rivals. But broad enterprise adoption will depend on how easily software teams can adapt to the new hardware.
Server farms are consuming enormous amounts of electricity. Power grids are feeling the strain. According to official development disclosures from Fujitsu, central processors alone account for 60% of total data center power consumption. The company designed the Monaka chip specifically to address this bottleneck and support carbon neutral computing goals.
Fujitsu is relying on leading edge fabrication to hit its targets. The processor combines proprietary in house engineering with an advanced 2 nanometer manufacturing node. It runs on the industry standard ARM instruction set, which allows it to handle varied enterprise workloads without requiring massive software rewrites. Security and hardware reliability are also baked directly into the silicon design.
The company outlined 4 specific development targets for the Monaka platform. These include delivering 2 times higher performance, achieving double the energy efficiency over competing processors, reinforcing system security, and maintaining broad software compatibility. By focusing on raw efficiency per watt, Fujitsu intends to challenge dominant chipmakers in the expanding green infrastructure market.
