IBM Unveils Dual Architecture Mainframe Processor with Native Arm Support

IBM has introduced the first dual architecture mainframe processor at the annual Hot Chips conference. Built on a 2 nanometer process, the chip runs both IBM and Arm instructions concurrently on the same silicon cores. Future IBM Z and LinuxONE mainframes will use the hardware to bridge modern cloud software with traditional high volume transaction systems.

Modern enterprise servers usually require separate dedicated processors for different software architectures. IBM designed this chip to eliminate that divide. Each of the 11 high performance cores operates at more than 5.7 GHz and executes Arm and IBM code at the same time. The silicon also integrates dedicated AI accelerators for live fraud detection alongside an on chip data processing unit to speed up storage traffic.

Bringing native Arm support directly into mainframe hardware opens the platform to 22,000,000 developers who build cloud software worldwide. Companies can run standard Linux applications right next to existing zOS setups while keeping established mainframe security features like hardware fault recovery and advanced cryptographic keys. In full scale enterprise deployments, systems can expand to hundreds of cores and tens of terabytes of memory.

The new silicon is the first major hardware milestone to emerge from a direct technical partnership between IBM and Arm. Christian Jacobi, Chief Technology Officer and IBM Fellow for systems development, outlined the strategic focus during the conference reveal.

As organizations modernize their application portfolios and integrate AI into core business operations, they need infrastructure that expands their options. By bringing Arm natively to our platform, we are combining access to one of the fastest growing software ecosystems with the qualities that have made IBM systems the foundation for business.

Arm executive Mohamed Awad pointed out that AI expansion is pushing enterprise software toward Arm architecture across the industry. By letting data centers run these workloads inside high availability mainframes, IBM wants to stop companies from splitting their infrastructure between separate servers. Commercial hardware using this dual instruction chip will arrive in upcoming generations of IBM Z and LinuxONE systems.
