American startup Nori Robotics has introduced the Nori A3, an affordable domestic robot designed to handle everyday household chores. Priced at $1688, the machine operates on a wheeled base with 2 manipulator arms and runs for roughly 8 hours on a single charge. However, buyers will have to train the robot themselves using specialized simulation software.
The physical design prioritizes low cost utility over complex bipedal walking. Instead of legs, the machine rolls around on a motorized wheeled platform. It navigates indoor spaces using a combination of cameras and LiDAR sensors. Its 2 mechanical arms feature specialized grippers capable of picking up household objects, loading dishes into a dishwasher, and fetching food from the refrigerator. The company claims the internal battery provides roughly 8 hours of continuous operation before needing a recharge.
The most unusual aspect of the Nori A3 is its software approach. Rather than shipping with fully autonomous routines for every chore, the robot requires owners to teach it new tasks. Nori Robotics provides simulation software where users can create customized routines and share them with an online community of owners. This crowdsourced approach keeps the entry price low while allowing the robots capabilities to expand over time.
Maintenance is also geared toward DIY enthusiasts. A large portion of the physical components can be produced at home using standard 3D printers. If a plastic bracket or joint breaks, owners can simply print a replacement piece and install it without sending the entire unit back to the manufacturer.
