Overclockers Solder Power Cables Directly to RTX 5090 PCB to Stop Connector Melting

Brazilian overclocking team TecLab has demonstrated a radical solution to graphics card power failures by soldering power cables directly to an RTX 5090 circuit board. The modification completely bypasses the standard dual 16 pin headers to feed over 1200W of power straight into the hardware. But the risky procedure immediately voids the warranty on a $5000 flagship graphics card.

TecLab tackled the persistent issue of melting power connectors with an uncompromising workshop modification. The team chose a specialized Galax GeForce RTX 5090 D HOF OC LAB XOC graphics card for the project. Unlike standard retail models that use a single socket, this extreme version comes equipped with 2 separate 16 pin power connectors from the factory. Instead of plugging standard cables into those plastic housings, the technicians soldered 2 complete sets of heavy gauge power supply lines straight onto the copper input pads of the board.

Bypassing the physical plugs removes the primary point of failure. Connector melting happens when pins experience uneven contact, leading to high electrical resistance and intense heat buildup. Hardwiring the power supply directly to the card eliminates the plug interface entirely. The modified graphics card booted without issues and completed a full battery of benchmark runs.

Preventing melted plastic is only part of the story here. Raw current capacity is the true objective for competitive benchmarkers. A standard 16 pin connector has an official rating of 600W. When pushing hardware under liquid nitrogen cooling, extreme overclockers easily blow past that limit. Direct soldering allows this custom board to draw well over 1200W safely, while some specialized power profiles can even push toward 2500W board limits during record attempts.

This approach makes sense for competitive overclocking teams chasing world records, but everyday PC builders should never try it at home. Soldering directly to the board permanently destroys your warranty coverage on an expensive piece of hardware. Solder joints can also suffer from metal fatigue when expanding and contracting across repeated thermal cycles. TecLab openly acknowledged that while the card survived initial stress testing, long term reliability remains completely untested.
