AMD Adds Ryzen 5 7500 and Ryzen 5 5500F to Budget Desktop Lineup

AMD has rolled out 2 new budget desktop processors across separate hardware generations. The Ryzen 5 7500 brings Zen 4 architecture and integrated graphics to the AM5 socket for $189, while the $99 Ryzen 5 5500F extends the lifespan of the aging AM4 platform. Both chips target price conscious PC builders who want solid multi thread performance without paying for expensive flagship silicon.

The AM4 socket refuses to fade away. The Ryzen 5 5500F adds another 6 core and 12 thread option to the platform, but the internal layout has an interesting history. Unlike the older standard Ryzen 5 5500 which uses monolithic Cezanne silicon, this new 5500F variant is built on Vermeer chiplets. It is essentially a cut down Ryzen 5 5600 running at a 3.0 GHz base frequency and boosting up to 4.4 GHz under a 65W thermal design power.

The catch is the cache. AMD cut the L3 capacity down to 16MB, which is half of what you get on the standard 5600. However, you gain full support for 20 lanes of PCIe 4.0 connectivity. That is a massive upgrade over the PCIe 3.0 limits on the older 5500. At $99 in the United States and roughly £88 on retail listings at Scan UK, it sits about 38% below the current price of a 5600. It gives budget gamers a fast path to modern storage speeds on older motherboards.

Moving over to the modern AM5 platform, the Ryzen 5 7500 fills an important entry level void. This processor carries the exact same core blueprint as the older 7500F, packing 6 Zen 4 cores, 12 threads, 32MB of L3 cache, and a top clock speed of 5.0 GHz. The thermal design power holds steady at 65W.

The primary upgrade here is display support. AMD included 2 RDNA 2 graphics compute units running at up to 2200 MHz. This means buyers do not need a discrete graphics card just to set up the system or complete basic daily desktop tasks. Priced at $189, or about £168 in the UK, it costs 16% less than the Ryzen 5 7600 while offering nearly identical general performance. The only real hurdle for builders remains the mandatory cost of DDR5 memory modules and compatible AM5 motherboards.
