Hello Games is bringing No Mans Sky to iPhone and iPad, allowing mobile players to access its procedural universe for $20 with a free demo available before purchase. The port runs on Apple hardware starting with the iPhone 11 and takes up less than 5 GB of local storage. The initial mobile release excludes multiplayer and settlements.
The mobile edition contains all previous content expansions up through the Cosmos update. Players can control the game using touch screen buttons or external gamepads, while iPad owners can use physical mouse and keyboard inputs. Supported devices start at the iPhone 11 and the generation 3 iPad Air. Hello Games chose to drop multiplayer connectivity and planetary settlements to keep the mobile game stable on handheld hardware.
Hello Games founder Sean Murray told Polygon that work on the mobile conversion began 3 years ago. Developers applied optimization methods developed for the PS4 alongside backend systems built for Light No Fire, the studio fantasy adventure title. Both games share the same proprietary engine, allowing code improvements to move between the 2 projects without rebuilding core tools.
This development link helped existing versions of the game as well. Systems built for Light No Fire allowed developers to add walkable ship interiors to No Mans Sky while testing procedural terrain generation for the future release. Hello Games has not set a public launch window for Light No Fire.
