Developers have launched LineageOS 24, bringing an open source operating system based on Android 17 to modern hardware. The initial stable release supports 175 devices, an increase of 28 models over the previous release cycle. Builds are available immediately through the official developer portal for phones, emulators, televisions, and automotive units.
LineageOS 24 updates several core software utilities. A photo editor called Canvas includes functions for image cropping, white balance adjustments, and color filters. The system updater features a visual overhaul based on Material 3 Expressive guidelines. System updates now default to package streaming, which downloads and applies files simultaneously to cut installation times and reduce storage requirements.
The default browser called Jelly runs on Chromium 155 and supports progressive web apps that users can pin directly to their home screens. The Android TV launcher includes updated icons and smoother system animations. Handheld consoles and smartphones receive a dedicated battery percentage indicator. Other modifications include updated calendar software, an improved backup tool, and a browser based installer that flashes the system without manual command line entry. Accessibility tools from the A11Y project are also integrated into the system core.
