Marvell Structera X Series Delivers 6 Channel CXL Memory Expansion

Marvell has introduced the second generation Structera X series CXL memory expansion controllers, led by the 3406 and 3506 models. The new silicon delivers 6 memory channels alongside multi host memory sharing for up to 4 separate computer systems. Hardware samples are scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2027.

Both controllers operate on CXL 3.2 and PCIe Gen 6 for their uplink connections. On the downstream memory side, Marvell includes 6 memory channels. The Structera X 3406 manages up to 9TB of capacity using 18 DDR4 RDIMM slots. The Structera X 3506 handles up to 6TB of memory across 12 DDR5 RDIMM slots. These memory ceilings allow cloud operators to scale server memory capacity far past standard motherboard slot limits.

Marvell enables memory pool sharing across up to 4 host servers at the same time. This shared pool design cuts down on idle memory across server clusters by routing capacity where compute loads peak. Integrated compression acceleration pushes LZ4 throughput to 250GB per second, marking a 5 times speed increase over the earlier generation. This throughput delivers between 2 and 3 times the effective memory capacity. For enterprise safety, both chips include enterprise grade RAS reliability functions and post quantum cryptography security.
