Microsoft Reveals Surface Laptop Ultra And Dev Box with NVIDIA RTX Spark Superchip

Microsoft has announced the Surface Laptop Ultra, featuring an NVIDIA RTX Spark Superchip capable of 1 petaflop of local artificial intelligence performance. The notebook pairs a 15 inch Mini LED screen with a magnetic USB C charging port designed for developers running complex models on device. Preorders are open now starting at $2599, alongside a companion desktop Dev Box priced at $5999.

Microsoft built the internal system around the NVIDIA RTX Spark platform. The processor combines an NVIDIA Grace CPU offering up to 20 cores, an NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 6144 cores, and up to 128GB of unified memory. This hardware allows developers to run artificial intelligence models exceeding 120B parameters directly on the machine without internet connectivity. Thermal capacity increases by 2.5 times over previous Surface notebooks, enabling the machine to sustain 99% of its maximum power output while running on battery.

The 15 inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen uses a Mini LED panel with a 3 by 2 aspect ratio, reaching a peak HDR brightness of 2000 nits. Physical interaction relies on a haptic trackpad that is 30% larger than earlier designs. The aluminum chassis measures 18 millimeters thick and weighs 4.5 pounds. Physical storage uses a user removable solid state drive available in capacities up to 2TB.

Connectivity centers on Magnetic Connect, a magnetic USB C charging system that continues to transfer video and data while delivering power. Additional physical connections include 2 standard USB C ports, 1 USB A port, 1 HDMI port, an SD card reader, and a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. The system can run up to 3 external 4K displays simultaneously.

Windows 11 supports local coding agents through Microsoft Execution Containers, isolating agent tasks to prevent unauthorized system access. Alongside the laptop, Microsoft revealed the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box for desktop workstations. This compact unit uses the same RTX Spark architecture, delivering 1 petaflop of computing power and 128GB of unified memory for stationary development setups. The desktop hardware ships with preconfigured development tools including Visual Studio Code and GitHub Copilot.
