Independent developer Sword has released PS5SX2, an emulator that enables modified PlayStation 5 consoles to read and execute original PlayStation 2 game discs. The software runs physical DVD media through the internal disc drive or external USB drives alongside digital image formats like ISO and CHD. The standard console optical drive cannot read legacy CD format discs.
PS5SX2 increases visual output up to 4K resolution using custom image filters including AMD FSR. The emulator supports community patches for widescreen displays and 60 frames per second performance. Players also gain access to virtual memory cards, local multiplayer options, and original online network connectivity. The developer continues releasing software builds to address compatibility bugs across the broader catalog.

Official Sony backward compatibility focuses on PlayStation 4 software, restricting older catalog access to digital store purchases. Sword demonstrated a follow up project named PS5SX3 in a public video demonstration aimed at running PlayStation 3 media. The developer commented on the project on X:
First PS2 discs. Now PS3 discs.

The project highlights how homebrew software continues unlocking physical disc playback that official console firmware intentionally ignores.
