Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Cartridge Support as Rivals Cut Discs

Nintendo has confirmed it has no plans to abandon physical game cartridges, keeping tangible media supported on the Switch 2 platform. Speaking to Coelho during the Brasil Game Show, Latin America vice president Bill van Zyll stated that player preference continues to guide company distribution decisions. The confirmation arrives as competitors Sony accelerate initiatives to phase out physical game discs entirely.

Nintendo maintains a neutral position on delivery formats, offering both digital storefront downloads and physical retail cartridges for Switch 2 hardware. Van Zyll explained that the company is responding directly to fans who value physical ownership.

We have no plans to abandon physical game cartridges right now, and we know how much fans appreciate them.

This commitment stands in contrast to changes underway across rival hardware ecosystems. Sony confirmed that PlayStation platforms will end physical disc distribution for upcoming titles, setting a path toward a digital only ecosystem that has caused debate among players concerned about game ownership.

Microsoft is exploring a similar direction for its next generation console project, designated Project Helix. A recent corporate survey asked Xbox users directly whether physical disc drives remain necessary on future hardware. Microsoft also rolled out a feature allowing players to convert select physical game discs into digital entitlements linked to their personal user accounts.
