Seagate Books Nearline Hard Drive Production Capacity Through 2028

Seagate has allocated virtually all of its nearline hard drive manufacturing capacity through the 2028 calendar year. Long term supply agreements with select enterprise customers now reach into 2030. The storage manufacturer confirmed the long range booking during its FY2027 Q1 financial earnings call.

Seagate secured firm build to order contracts that lock in hardware configurations and pricing terms for nearline deliveries scheduled for next year. Over the coming quarters, the company plans to finalize specific pricing and hardware specifications for the capacity already allocated for 2028. This advance booking strategy gives enterprise data center operators guaranteed access to bulk storage while insulating production lines from sudden market shifts.

Seagate prioritizes increasing areal density over expanding physical factory footprints to satisfy enterprise storage demand. Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording drives will account for 50% of the company total nearline shipped capacity by the end of this calendar year. Within that allocation, the 4TB per platter Mozaic 4 platform will represent 50% of all HAMR shipments.

Development for the next generation Mozaic 5 platform is progressing toward customer qualification shipments targeted for late 2027. This upcoming architecture raises platter capacity to 5TB. In recent laboratory trials, Seagate engineers demonstrated experimental storage densities reaching 8TB on a single platter, outlining the long range scaling path for magnetic media.
