SmartSens Launches SC5D8XS Image Sensor with Dual Focal Length LOFIC

SmartSens has launched the SC5D8XS, a 50 MP mobile image sensor supporting LOFIC technology across both 1X and 2X focal lengths. Built on a 1/1.28 inch optical format, the chip debuts Lofic HDR 4.0 to deliver up to 110dB of exposure latitude and 4K 60fps recording. The component has entered mass production for upcoming smartphones.

Lofic HDR 4.0 expands HDR performance to secondary zoom levels, reaching 110dB at 1X and 100dB at 2X. SmartSens tackles video motion artifacts by merging 3 frames within a single exposure, sharpening moving edges and reducing ghosting. Recording capabilities include 4K at 60fps under Lofic HDR 4.0 alongside 4K at 120fps using PixGain HDR mode.

SmartSens splits focusing behavior based on focal length and shooting mode. In LOFIC operation, 1X uses 6% partial pixel phase detection to save power, while 2X engages 100% full pixel autofocus for precision. Standard shooting modes switch between AllPix ADAF full pixel focus and Sparse PDAF partial detection depending on ambient light. The chip relies on a 22nm Stack process, drawing 550mW during HDR video capture, an 18% reduction over earlier designs, and 200mW during baseline tasks.

The SC5D8XS is already in volume production, positioning SmartSens as a direct competitor in the premium mobile camera market.
