Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black for the Japanese market, priced at 55000 yen. The console requires a regional Japanese account and locks system language options strictly to Japanese. Alongside the hardware reveal, Sony confirmed that physical game discs will be phased out entirely starting in 2028.
The console runs an 825 GB solid state drive, an 8 core AMD Zen 2 processor, and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory to deliver 10 TFLOPS of graphical performance. Because this revision lacks an integrated optical drive, buyers who want to run disc media must purchase a matching Midnight Black external disc drive sold separately for 11980 yen. Physical connectivity relies on 2 SuperSpeed USB Type A ports, 2 USB Type C ports, an HDMI output, and Wi Fi 6 networking. The chassis weighs roughly 2.5 kilograms and draws a maximum of 350 W.
Sony engineered this release exclusively for domestic consumers. The operating system prevents users from switching the user interface language away from Japanese, and the hardware functions solely when linked to a PlayStation Network account registered inside Japan. Buyers in the country also receive an extended 2 year warranty program rather than the typical single year coverage.
Inside the release documentation is a policy change that alters the future of PlayStation game distribution. Sony stated that physical disc production will cease completely within the next 2 years, turning future releases entirely digital across retail channels.
PlayStation games released from 2028 onwards will only be sold as digital versions from PlayStation Store and other retailers. Disc versions of games released before 2028 will continue to be playable.
This decision establishes a definitive cutoff point for retail discs. Gamers will retain access to older disc titles through external disc drives, but all newly published titles after the cutoff will exist purely as digital downloads.
