Sony PlayStation Brings QSSR AI Upscaling to Standard PS5 Consoles

Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, bringing artificial intelligence upscaling directly to the base PlayStation 5. Known as QSSR, the lightweight technology is designed to sharpen visual detail and image stability in upcoming titles like Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. The feature arrives as a direct result of joint engineering work with AMD.

Sony developed QSSR as part of Project Amethyst, a joint development initiative with AMD. The technology serves as a streamlined variation of PSSR, the upscaler originally created for higher tier hardware. Engineers tuned a reduced neural network specifically around the silicon inside the standard PS5. This lightweight design allows the console to process visual data quickly without eating up the computing headroom needed for core gameplay rendering.

The primary benefit of QSSR centers on image stability and finer surface textures during fast motion. Early implementation focuses on 2 flagship titles: Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. By applying trained machine learning models to the rendering pipeline, the system reconstructs sub native resolutions into crisp high definition output. This gives base console owners cleaner edges and reduced visual noise in demanding games without requiring a hardware upgrade.
