GTA VI Hype is Real: Should Rockstar Stop Releasing Trailers
Let's be real, the hype for Grand Theft Auto VI is off the charts. We've only gotten one trailer, and yet the gaming community has not stopped talking about it since it came out. You can't help but wonder, what's next. One person who was way inside Rockstar Games has an interesting view: maybe they just need to cut it off right there.
Insights from a Former Rockstar Insider
Obbe Vermeil, who previously worked as a technical lead at Rockstar, recently shared some thoughts. While reminiscing about Grand Theft Auto IV (which just turned 17), he dropped some cool behind-the-scenes tidbits. Remember those RPG features from San Andreas, like hitting the gym. He confirmed they were initially planned for GTA IV but got cut because the team was racing against the clock. They also ended up rescheduling the game from late 2007 to spring 2008.
Vermeil thinks we are likely to see the same behavior with GTA VI release date promises. He remembered that the final decision to delay GTA IV happened around July of 2007, which was fairly close to the original October deadline. He suggests keeping the same time range this year, especially until next August's Take-Two's earnings report, for potential releases about GTA VI's final release timing.
"The Element of Surprise"
But the most interesting aspect was his opinion on the hype engine. Asked whether he would hype GTA VI, Vermeil had a revolutionary proposal:
"If it were up to me, I would not release any new trailers," he said.
Why. The hype is already through the roof. Withholding would add an "element of surprise" that would make the actual launch even bigger and more monumental.
One of his comments was chimed in by a fan, who said Rockstar might just simply put up the release date and stop at that. Vermeil heartily agreed, referring to that move as the "act of a real boss."
It's definitely food for thought. As hungry as we all are to see more of Vice City, maybe less is more. We do at least know that Grand Theft Auto VI is coming for a late 2025 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, with the PC release to come a little later, as is tradition.
