The parry system was one major aspect that caught the eye. It seemed with the essence of timing, blocking and counter-attacks were also very important, for Musashi was seen to deftly parry the attacks of both agile lesser demons as well as huge, intimidating foes.
The trailer saw a re-introducing of Sasaki Ganryu. If you know any Japanese history (and indeed, Onimusha lore), you will know the name. He is becoming one of Musashi's greatest opponents just like their historical counterparts.
Tentatively, mark the date for Onimusha Way of the Sword for 2026 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Can't really wait that long. If by any chance you are visiting Gamescom this year, you will actually get a chance to try out the game before its scheduled release.
Curious where the series has been. The recent remaster of Onimusha 2 Samurai's Destiny provides a great template for experiencing the special ingredients that make Onimusha unique. It's a pretty unique blend; somewhere between the tense survival horror of the early Resident Evil games and over-the-top stylish action of the original Devil May Cry, which, incidentally, was originally a sequel to Resident Evil.
This new trailer has whetted the appetite. The focus on skillful combat and classic rivalries returning suggests Onimusha Way of the Sword aims to create an experience paying tribute to its past while offering something new for a new generation of players.
