Can You Fit a Big SSD in a Nintendo Switch 2 A DIY Try to Find Out
A new DIY try by YouTuber Yu from the 'Better Gaming' show looked into if the Nintendo Switch 2's tiny SD card spot could use a big NVMe SSD. Using a shared tool plan, this test shows both the chance for cheap more space and a big tech block.
The Try Linking a SSD to the tiny SD Card Spot
The idea uses same tech. The Switch 2's tiny SD card way uses the PCIe Gen 3 x1 rule and NVMe way, just like new SSDs. Yu did:
- Used a shared tool plan from NV&T Labs.
- Made a custom PCB to link the tiny SD card pins to a M.2 2230 slot.
- Put the parts together and hooked up a 1TB Corsair MP600 Mini NVMe SSD.
The End Cant Get to Error
After making the SSD ready and putting it in the game unit, the Nintendo Switch 2 did not see the drive as ready to use. It showed a "Can't get to SD card" error, showing a talk fail.
Why It Failed The Lost Talk Move
The main issue is the talk rule. The Switch 2 is set to do a set "move" with the chip on an SD Express card. A plain NVMe SSD, missing this chip, can't do this first talk, even though it uses the same base PCIe tech.
The Next Step for Cheap Switch 2 Space
Even though it did not work this time, it's not the end. NV&T Labs, who made the tool, said that future forms will add a tiny control unit or FPGA. This part would act like the needed move, making the game unit take the NVMe drive.
So, for now, you can't just put an SSD into the Switch 2's card place. Yet, this test has started a hopeful path. Once the talk issue is fixed, this kind of tool could open the way for low-cost, big space on Nintendo's game unit.
