Todd Howard Outlines Bethesda 2026 Strategy Including Starfield PS5 Arrival With Manual Space Flight and The Elder Scrolls 6 Production Using Creation Engine 3 Technology

The presentation by Todd Howard showed the 2026 plan of Bethesda which included updates about Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6. The studio head Todd Howard announced during the 2026 evaluation which reviewed Bethesda Game Studios present progress that the company had changed its approach to platform development and technical progress. The studio now focuses on producing The Elder Scrolls 6 after finishing the "Year Two" upgrade of Starfield while it continues to improve its currently available games for more console systems.

Starfield will become available on PlayStation 5 after spending more than two years as an exclusive title on the ecosystem. Howard explained that Bethesda functions as an Xbox first party studio but the company maintained active relations with PlayStation through its ongoing work on Fallout 76 and Skyrim. The development team decided to convert the game because they believed it would happen at a future time instead of encountering technical challenges.

Starfield currently undergoes a substantial transformation through its implementation of the "Free Lanes" structural adjustment. The expansion enables players to travel between planets and moons of a system through manual flight which resolves long standing issues that players reported about space travel. The feature functions through

  • Autopilot and Interior Interaction Players can set a course and walk around their ship interior while in transit.
  • Dynamic Encounters Players now use new radar systems to explore deep space while discovering points of interest which were previously hidden from fast traveling players.
  • Terran Armada DLC This technical upgrade will be used to develop a new expansion which will deliver a new storyline to players.

Howard announced that The Elder Scrolls 6 has entered full production after the studio and external partners dedicated their resources to the project. The game development team uses Creation Engine 3 which represents the latest version of Bethesda proprietary technology to eliminate bottlenecks that developers experienced while creating Starfield.

Creation Engine 3 has three principal technical objectives to achieve

  • Scalable Performance The engine is designed to handle high end PC hardware while maintaining stability on lower powered devices and handhelds.
  • Advanced Data Loading The engine has received improvements which focus on two main areas better performance when loading high detail assets and the engine ability to manage vast Bethesda open worlds.
  • Internal Stability The new pipeline enables developers to create and examine content on a daily basis because they can develop and test content without the need to update the engine, which would disrupt their ongoing work. Howard confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 currently operates with playable builds which have passed all internal testing requirements.

Howard expressed his support for the new leadership after both Phil Spencer and Asha Sharma had stepped down from their positions. Spencer supported Bethesda as a close friend however Matt Booty now leads the current partnership which maintains control over studio creative decisions.

Howard displayed his acknowledgement of the new game announcement approach which the studio now follows. He admitted that the early reveal of The Elder Scrolls 6 in 2018 was intended to reassure fans during a period of transition but noted his preference for shorter gaps between a game announcement and its release. Bethesda has decided to start "compressing" the windows which players use to build their expectations about upcoming game releases.

The existing Bethesda system for next generation technology permits games to run on any platform which supports their requirements. The studio will ensure that future role playing games can operate on all devices after which their technical performance will extend to high end consoles and portable gaming PCs. The studio will extend to all devices beyond the "tape out" limit, which restricts performance to specific chip designs.
