Samsung Restarts NVIDIA RTX 3060 Production to Meet AI Demand

Samsung is firing up its factories again to make NVIDIA's RTX 3060 GPUs after stopping two years ago. NVIDIA is doing this to get more hardware out there since the US put limits on exporting high end AI chips. Samsung will use its older 8 nanometer tech to build which it used before when making these GPUs before reducing production in 2022.

NVIDIA can't send its best Hopper (H) and Blackwell (B) series to China now. So the older RTX 3060 is a good choice for both gaming and simple AI tasks. This restart is because of a few things

  • Trade The US now requires licenses for NVIDIA's H20 products so NVIDIA is looking at older unrestricted designs for the Chinese market.
  • Not Enough Chips At CES 2026 NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang said bringing back older GPUs helps with the global AI chip shortage.
  • Good Enough The RTX 3060 was originally for gaming but it can also handle basic AI and image jobs.

Getting NVIDIA back as a customer for its 8nm tech should really help Samsung's factories stay busy. The 8nm line can make about 30000 to 40000 wafers each month. This is almost 10 percent of Samsung's total output. Some good things that will come from that include

  • More Money Making more use of older tech that is already paid off increases profit.
  • Easy to Make The 8nm tech is reliable and cheap which is helpful when making a lot of older hardware.
  • Good Business This work goes well with Samsung's current production of NVIDIA chips for the Nintendo Switch 2 which strengthens their collaboration.

Experts think that if Samsung can successfully deliver many RTX 3060s they might get more orders for older hardware. The AI world is using up all the newest chips (3nm and smaller). So older tech like 8nm is becoming popular again for other processing tasks and certain electronics. This comeback is key to Samsung's plan to get its factory business back to making money through 2026 and beyond.
