SpaceX has officially introduced its strategy for orbital data centers marking a significant shift in the global computing landscape. The company intends to utilize specialized satellites for high intensity data processing and artificial intelligence operations outside the atmosphere of Earth. The project intends to conduct heavy computational tasks in space because that environment provides specific benefits through its power sources and climatic conditions.

Elon Musk confirmed the development of the AI Sat Mini which serves as the fundamental unit of this new network. Each individual satellite is engineered to generate up to one hundred kilowatts of power to support demanding AI tasks. SpaceX targets a massive deployment of up to one million of these units to create a comprehensive orbital processing grid. The company established the Terafab project to create processors which will produce one terawatt of power every year.

The hardware uses a D3 chip which functions as a processor designed to meet the requirements of space environments. Every satellite in the constellation features approximately one hundred square meters of solar panels and radiators to manage power generation and heat dissipation. The components enable D3 chips to function with high efficiency while facing direct radiation exposure and orbiting temperature changes.

Financial analysis suggests that orbital data centers could become more cost effective than traditional terrestrial facilities within two to three years. SpaceX is already looking beyond Earth orbit for future manufacturing solutions. The company plans to manufacture satellites on the Moon and launch them through electromagnetic catapult systems. The advanced method would eliminate the requirement for conventional chemical rocket systems which will lead to lower operational costs for space data systems.
