GoPro MISSION 1 Series Launch Marks Strategic Shift to High End Cinema Cameras With 8K GP3 Processor and Interchangeable Lens Systems
GoPro aims to establish itself in the high end cinema market through its launch of the MISSION 1 camera series. The company has made its first step into the new high end digital imaging market through the launch of its MISSION 1 camera series which represents a major change in business strategy. This collection which became public before the NAB tradeshow demonstrates the company's shift toward creating professional grade cinematography equipment instead of producing basic casual action capturing products. The MISSION 1 Pro ILS stands at the forefront of this collection because it serves as a compact mirrorless cinema camera which uses Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens mounting technology for interchangeable optical lenses.
The company's GP3 processor functions as the main component which drives this change. The 5nm chip has been developed to support 8K video recording at 60 frames per second through its thermal power handling capabilities. The 50 megapixel 1 inch sensor features native 1.6µm pixels which enable the sensor to deliver processing capacity. The hardware uses Quad Bayer mode to capture 3.2µm fused pixels which creates a dynamic range that extends 14 stops. The new imaging pipeline presents filmmakers with an advanced shadow detailing system which maintains professional grade highlight preservation abilities in a compact design after replacing all GoPro equipment.
The three models of the series showed their differences through their distinct output capabilities together with their different design elements. The Pro and Pro ILS models deliver 8K resolution at 60fps and 4K at 240fps, yet the standard MISSION 1 offers 8K30 and 4K120 as its basic resolution options. The chassis design now includes a 14% larger OLED rear screen together with taller buttons which enable users to operate the device while wearing gloves, and the system features an updated 159 degree field of view lens. The MISSION 1 together with its Pro version offers users strong waterproof protection which keeps them dry up to 20 meters without needing extra protective cases, while the ILS model has been designed to protect against weather elements when used with all MFT lens systems.
GoPro CEO Nicholas Woodman described the release as a direct response to the demands of pro minded customers who have long requested a more powerful camera line. Senior Vice President of Product Pablo Lema said that this series establishes a new performance standard for compact cinematography. It enables filmmakers to create professional grade movies through its combination of action camera durability and high end mirrorless camera capabilities.
The company will introduce a complete range of accessories which will last until 2026. The company will introduce a 32 bit float wireless microphone system and Volta 2 battery grip and Media Mod for I/O expansion through this project. The MISSION 1 series will enable GoPro to take on dedicated cinema hardware through its upcoming product launch which will begin preorders on May 21 and become available in late May and Q3.
