The first thing you will notice when starting this new game is that the speed of play has been entirely revamped. The quiet times for gathering resources, only occasionally broken by an alien swarm, are no longer there. Instead, players are constantly up against a strict, unforgiving timer. Being efficient is absolutely critical here. If you spend too long searching for upgrades or lost minerals, the game will unleash unkillable underground monsters that will hunt you down and end your run early. This never ending threat pushes teams to move quickly, making every descent a deeply stressful, adrenaline fueled race against the clock.

Missions usually run for about 45 to 60 minutes, consisting of several stages that go deeper and deeper, each one finishing with tough boss fights. It is an exhausting test of continuous decision making, where even a brief pause can send the enemy aggression completely spiraling out of control.

Currently, the game offers five distinct classes, known as Reclaimers, and their design is arguably the strongest aspect of the current version. Rather than simple damage roles, these characters provide vital support abilities that can often salvage a run that seems doomed.

  • The Guardian: This class acts as the team's anchor. With abilities that reduce incoming damage and push back swarms, they become almost mandatory on higher difficulty levels.
  • The Falconer: A master of versatile support. Their ability to deploy drones that can remotely revive downed teammates during a chaotic firefight is a complete game changer.
  • The Recon: Designed for players who enjoy managing ability cooldowns. This class has a high skill cap, letting users rewind time to recover valuable ammunition and health.
  • The Spotter: Crucial for maximizing group damage, ensuring critical hits against large boss targets.
  • The Slicer: While incredibly satisfying in close quarters combat, this melee focused fighter currently feels a bit too one dimensional when compared to the varied usefulness of the other four.

For players who prefer a solitary experience, solo play is surprisingly effective. You are accompanied by an AI drone companion named Cooper, who assists in combat and resource gathering, ensuring that lone players are not left entirely at the mercy of the alien hordes.

Like any roguelite, the random way weapons, abilities, and level layouts are generated heavily influences how the game unfolds. Collecting "Exponite" allows teams to interact with terminals and select power ups. Interestingly, many of these upgrades require team consensus, adding a layer of strategic negotiation to the multiplayer experience.

However, the heavy reliance on random chance is currently the game's biggest challenge. Weapon balance is noticeably uneven in this Early Access phase. If the random roll of the dice favors you, your dwarf can become an unstoppable force, easily wiping out enemy swarms. Conversely, if you are stuck with less than ideal gear and perks that do not mesh well, you might find yourself feeling completely useless as your teammates do all the heavy lifting. This inconsistency can lead to incredibly frustrating hour long sessions for players who are not so lucky.

Visually, the game still looks like the first one, with its signature low poly style, but now it has got a much darker, creepier look. It really leans into sci fi horror, and the excellent soundtrack, which is often ambient and sometimes experimental, makes it even scarier. When you are not in a run, you go back to the "Ramrod", a spaceship hub where you can play mini games and learn more about the story.

You can improve your character over time through "Enhancements", which are small stat boosts that help you handle harder difficulties. It feels good to climb the ranks and earn "Ascensions" which are basically like prestige levels but right now, the overall progression does not really let you change up your build much during a run. Mostly, you are just getting stronger stats instead of cool new abilities that shake up the gameplay, so after about twenty hours, your runs might start to feel a little too similar.

PROS
  • Intense and highly satisfying combat system
  • Well-designed classes with meaningful utility abilities
  • Solo play remains enjoyable thanks to the AI companion
  • Dark art style and soundtrack create a strong atmosphere
  • Movement mechanics stay strategic and fun throughout
CONS
  • RNG can occasionally leave players underpowered during long runs
  • Weapon balance still needs refinement
  • Limited enemy and boss variety at the moment
  • Meta progression focuses too heavily on stat upgrades

It is a brilliant, exciting game at its core, and with a little more content and balancing, it could easily be one of the best in its genre.
