Mozilla Project Nova Interface Redesign Introduces New Visual Identity and Performance Improvements for Desktop and Mobile Browsers

Mozilla is beginning public testing for a new major interface and functional redesign of its flagship browser, now internally called Project Nova. This interface overhaul is coming to both desktop and mobile browsers, aiming to carve out a unique identity that stands apart from the current look of the Chromium basedbrowsers. Its creators say the redesign puts the focus on legibility and simpler navigation controls.

The visual identity for Project Nova seems to be a bright purple hue accompanied by fire inspired, warm color scheme as opposed to the flat and minimalist style that had been present up until this update. This results in rounded tab shapes that show a slight gradient over the active tab and redesigned buttons, menus, and sidebars. All icons were entirely re created in order to better fit both light and dark modes of display.

But these are not the only changes, an interface feature that users have been asking for quite some time will be re added in this update. Compact mode is being brought back to browser in order to make it physically smaller to have browser tabs take up less space on the users screen, giving them more space for content. The settings have been completely rewritten with plainer wording as well, especially on the privacy tab where tracker protection can now be easily understood by any general user.

The developers also say that performance has improved in conjunction with the visual changes. The browser showed a 9% improvement in load times over a year period and attribute this to very aggressive tracker blocking and systems to bring the basic website layout to the users screen as quickly as possible. The Project Nova interface is currently in Nightly for users to test and report bugs on. The stable version of the update should come out to the general public by the end of this calendar year.
