Red Dead Redemption 2 Becomes Third Best Selling Game In History With 85 Million Copies Sold As Rockstar Games Sees Global Success Across Multiple Platforms
Although the Grand Theft Auto series of games remains the main money maker for Rockstar Games, the western epic Red Dead Redemption 2 has already broken a historical record. Take Two Interactive's recent financial statement of the main publisher revealed that the game has reached over 85,000,000 copies sold since its release. This officially places the game as the third best selling game in history.
The sales figures that were updated at the end of May 2024 place the western game second after just two other mega hitters from the gaming industry. Grand Theft Auto 5 is in second place having sold over 230,000,000 units and Minecraft takes first place with 350,000,000 units sold. Some past record lists have often claimed high sales for games such as Tetris, but according to official mainstream industry tracking and research institutions, the Rockstar Games game ranks in the top 3 positions globally.
The total footprint of the Red Dead Redemption intellectual property has reached 115,000,000 cumulative sales across the globe. This figure includes the original game, the Undead Nightmare expansion, and the 2nd major entry. The commercial longevity of the franchise has been aided by recent platform migrations. Originally restricted to older hardware, the first game and its companion software have been ported to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch, Switch 2, and mobile operating systems including iOS and Android.
