Automated Web Traffic Surpasses Human Generated Activity Globally As AI Systems Driven Queries Reshape The Future Of Internet Monetization
Internet traffic has hit a major turning point globally, as for the first time, the quantity of automated web traffic now outweighs that generated by humans. CEO of Cloudflare, Matthew Prince, confirmed the switch as it announced the data is taken from its own networks. The turn is much sooner than previously anticipated by industry analysts who predicted a turn would not occur until 2027. The rise of sophisticated AI systems is to blame for this change taking place so quickly.
According to data collected from the Cloudflare network, bots account for 57.4 percent of the web queries from the platform while humans are responsible for 42.6 percent of web queries from the platform. Over the last 6 months, these numbers have dramatically shifted from more human driven to now bot driven. Whereas it takes a typical human user only a couple of web page views to conduct an action or purchase, an AI bot is capable of analyzing thousands of web pages at that same time to conduct the same task.
The change is occurring because AI systems have grown so sophisticated and are now operating independently as an intermediary, rather than being prompted by humans to complete tasks. In turn, they are causing an enormous increase in web queries being produced globally.
The increase in bot traffic on the internet will have a massive effect on the current internet economy. For now, almost every free web page relies on advertising. AI and bot scrapers have no way of clicking on any of the advertisements being presented to them so these sites have and are going to face dramatic issues in keeping the same revenue flow going.
We’ve also noticed a rise in bot activity, particularly from china such as Tencent, which appear to be extensively scraping content across the internet.
While web publishers are exploring ways to monetize their sites while taking into account the massive increase in bots, it is thought by many that they will have to move to a pay access system for automated systems to access their sites. Charging bots money to scrape the content of web pages may become an effective way to monetize the internet as it shifts towards a world run more by autonomous programs than by human users.
